Nintendo has confirmed that it is working on a new version of the Wii for 2012. The news was announced in a press release on the company’s Japanese Web site over the weekend. A playable model of the new system will be shown at June’s Electronics Entertainment Expo, better known as E3.
According to the release, the console will go on sale some time in 2012.
Rumors about the next Wii have been swirling for weeks, ramping up after GameInformer said it had confirmed Nintendo was working on its next Wii.
Since then, there have been many speculations about the new console, including the rumor that the new Wiimotes will have a touchscreen.
Nintendo definitely needs something new to offer its customers. In its earnings report for the quarter, the company announced its annual profit is down 66 percent.
Last week, Kotaku reported that Sony and Microsoft aren’t expected to launch their next generation consoles in 2014, which would leave Nintendo with some breathing room.
