Players get a more immersive game experience. You can use the controller as a pull-out menu with a game, either by giving you a different view of the game or, say, the aiming screen for a shooter. You can even pull games from the TV onto the controller to watch a show and keep playing at the same time. It can be used with or without Wiimotes.
You can also use the controller to play a stand-alone game without the TV and like a tablet to surf the Internet and display videos on your television.
Games for the Wii U include a new Lego series games, a new Tekken title, Batman:Arkham City, Assassin’s Creed, Darksider 2, a Ninja Gaiden title and Smash Brothers, which will also be on the 3DS. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata promised the two versions will be integrated.
Microsoft also made news at E3 by announcing the newest installment in the blockbuster Halo series, Halo 4, as well as a remake of the original Halo title. As Faster Forward explained:
E3 officially kicked off Tuesday, but Microsoft has already made some big announcements regarding the Xbox, the Kinect and, yes, the cloud.
Probably the biggest announcements out of the briefing yesterday were about Halo, the wildly popular series from Bungie. In addition to announcing that they’re remaking the original Halo with better graphic and online co-op gameplay, the studio also offered a peek at Halo 4:
Microsoft also offered a look at several other games, including Modern Warfare 3, Tomb Raider, Kinect Star Wars and Mass Effect 3, just one of the many things on the Xbox that’s getting Kinect voice integration.
Gamers will also be able to use their voices to control the XBox dashboard. Other new features Microsoft announced for the XBox include Bing search for Xbox Marketplace, Hulu, Netflix and YouTube, and cloud storage for gamer tags, achievements, profiles and game saves.
Not to be outdone, Sony unveiled their next-generation portable gaming device, called ‘PlayStation Vita’ at E3, which features a touch-interface and motion-sensitive design. As AP reported:
Sony Corp. on Monday took the wraps off its next generation portable gaming machine, PlayStation Vita, a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld that outdoes its workhorse PlayStation Portable and will go on sale before the winter holidays. Company executives have called the device Sony’s biggest product launch since the PlayStation 3 five years ago.
The device will allow gamers to be connected with one another over cellphone networks and Wi-Fi hotspots, and use GPS location-tracking technology. In the U.S., Sony is partnering exclusively with AT&T Inc. for cellphone service.
The device, available for $249 for its Wi-Fi-only version, was unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video game industry’s annual convention known as E3. A version that will also have cellphone service will retail for $299, and buyers will have to subscribe to a cellular data plan.
The handheld has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enable gamers to play against people using PlayStation 3 consoles over the Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was recently restored after being shut down due to a massive hacking attack.
