All About the iEDGE DS

iEDGE

The long awaited iEDGE DS, compatible with the Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo DSi XL, and Nintendo DSi LL, was officially released on the 9th of January 2010. It is the replacement for and successor to the original EDGE DS card, which was arguably the most reliable DS gaming cartridge ever made.

Using the iEDGE

The iEDGE DS comes in a triangular box (which looks particularly good as a gift) with a swivel cover. An elastic band covers the swivel cover to hold it in place. This looks exactly like the original EDGE DS - no sense in changing what was always a winning original formula.

The only other aesthetic difference between the original EDGE and iEDGE is that the original has a plain colour throughout while the DSi / DSi XL / DSi LL compatible one seems to have a blue gradient on the sticker. Both cartridges can come in either black or white.

Updating the iEDGE DS

The iEDGE DS needs to be updated in order to play on DSi consoles with firmware series 1.4 or greater. Some reputable and reliable stores will ship the cartridges pre-flashed, but many will not - so playing the cartridges on a 1.4 or later DSi would result in the following error message:
"An error has occured. Press and hold the Power Button to turn the system off. Please see the Nintendo DSi Operations Manual for help troubleshooting."

Using the iEDGE

Familiar users will be pleased to know that the iEDGE Graphical User Interface / Menu is exactly the same as the original EDGE DS card.

The icon on the left is for "Games", while the middle one is for "Multimedia", such as using your DS / DSi console to play MP3s. The right button in the shape of a cog, is for the iEDGE DS cartridge settings.

iEDGE Reliability

While it's still too early (as of Feb 2010) to comprehensively tell, it seems that the iEDGE DS is just as reliable as its old namesake the EDGE. The reason I suggest this is because many of the software functions and the general design of the card has remained exactly the same. The iEDGE team decided not to change what was already a winning formula, and in doing so I suspect they have made yet another winner in the iEDGE!
