How to setup HDMIKEY Wii for wii console Wii2 wiht HDMI Converter/ Adapter

Regardless of its release date all the current generation consoles come with a HDMI port, with the Xbox 360 adding this in a later hardware revision. The only console lacking a HDMI port is the Nintendo Wii, and I know what some of you are thinking “why bother since the Wii can only spit out a max resolution of 480p”. Well that is a fair call considering the optional component cables will be more than adequate for handling a 480p image but some people could find a HDMI equipped Wii handy. Anyone who has recently purchased a flat screen TV whether it be a Plasma, LCD or LED would have noticed that their screen now features a number of HDMI inputs. Wind the clock back a few years and the majority of TVs have more component and composite inputs than HDMI inputs if any. For example I recently purchased a LED TV that comes with one component input 4 HDMI inputs, the component input is occupied with another device leaving the Wii with nowhere to be plugged in. After numerous hardware revisions it’s a little boggling that Nintendo didn’t just add in a HDMI port considering this is slowly becoming the standard in AV connections, well if this bothers you as well don’t stress because HDMIkey has stepped up to the plate and presented us with a solution.
The HDMIKey is a simple but useful accessory for the Ninetndo Wii, this unit plugs into the AV port at the back of the Wii and takes the signal that would normally be passed though a set if bulky component cables and converts it into a HDMI signal. It requires no external power source even though it features a blue activity LED light, and any generic HDMI cable will work with the Wii HDMIKey . Unfortunately there’s no upscaling but the picture it provides in 480p is clean and sharp, but don’t rule out upscaling just yet because the HDMIKey is still in its infancy and since updates can be done through the Wii’s Opera browser there’s still a bit of room to grow. As of now the HDMIKey just allows you to plug your Wii into a screen via HDMI, for some people that maybe enough to warrant purchasing this accessory Watch this space or keep an eye on the MMGN Wii forums because we’ll keep you up to date on the development of this accessory.

With the cover removed you can see the HDMIkey is securely packaged with foam. Note: the instruction leaflet show above is the sample version and not what you get in the final product.

Gloss white outer casing will blend in well with white coloured Wii’s…not so well with black versions though.

I remember at one point I wanted to connect my Wii up to a computer monitor and running composite and/or component cables through a TV tuner card only netted me disappointing results, alternatively I could have sourced out an expensive VGA converter to get the job done but there was nothing on the market that had a decent reputation. So naturally I had to give the HDMIKey Wii a test drive with a computer monitor, using the HDMIKey with a HDMI cable worked a treat with my monitor that features multiple HDMI inputs, even the audio burbled its way through the horrible built in monitor speakers. That’s all well and good for those who have a newer computer monitor featuring HDMI inputs but what about those that have either lowered end or older monitor that only features DVI and VGA? Tried and tested a HDMIKey will work perfectly with HDMI to DVI dongle or a HDMI to DVI cable, to get your audio signal to either the monitor speakers or an external source you can utilize the HDMIKey’s analog 3.5mm audio jack.
The HDMIKey does have a little bit of size to it when compared to the OEM AV cables, when plugged in it will protrude out the rear of the console by 70mm then add to that another 20 to 30mm for the HDMI plug and the overall length maybe a concern for some people. The HDMIKey weighs next to nothing so there’s little to no strain on the AV port, the size of the unit maybe be an issue if you limited space where you have your Wii console sitting. In most cases it shouldn’t be a problem, there’s controller chargers that use the Wii’s power cable as a power source that stick out just as far.
Overall the HDMIKey is a good buy, it’s cheaper than most other digital signal alternatives, very simple to setup, room to grow thanks to firmware updates and is very flexible and compatible. Worth buying even if you are happy with the current component cables.

Getting the HDMIkey setup is as straightforward as it can get, everything works straight out of the box.

Setting up the HDMIkey
All the components you’ll need, a Wii, the HDMIkey and any generic HDMI cable…a TV might help as well.

Plug the HDMIkey into the Wii’s AV connection then plug the HDMI cable into the back of the HDMIkey with the other end of the HDMI cable going to your TV/receiver/monitor.

Using the above image and the one before that you can get an idea on how far the HDMIkey plus the HDMI cable protrude from the back of the console. For those wondering why my Wii looks a little odd it’s because it is a launch Wii with an aftermarket black casing kit, also the Gamecube covers have been removed.

With everything all plugged in all you need to do is power it up like normal and you are ready to game. Most people would have been using the component cables so your Wii’s resolution should have been set at 480p if for some reason it wasn’t then select the wide screen 480p option under the display settings

An optional step at this point is to register your HDMIkey and make yourself a profile on the HDMIkey website. From here you can validate your product to ensure you have a genuine item and receive email updates about the HDMIkey. Since firmware updates will become available and the HDMIkey is still under development it would probably be a good idea to subscribe to the newsletter.
