Consumers just can’t seem to get enough of the Kinect for Xbox 360. Demand for games such as “Kinect Sports” and “Dance Central” helped propel the Xbox 360 into the number-one selling video game console in April. Sales of “Kinect Sports” reached 3 million units worldwide and “Dance Central” sales reached 2.5 million units worldwide. Xbox 360 has also been the top-selling console in the United States for 10 out of the last 11 months and is the best-selling console in 2011.
Some April 2011 highlights from NPD Group, an independent market research firm, include:
- Xbox 360 sold 297,000 units in April, maintaining the number one console spot in the U.S.
- Xbox 360 console sales were up 60 percent year over year, the largest growth of any current generation console on the market.
- Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 x360key platform (including hardware, software and accessories) reached $310 million, still the highest among current generation consoles.
- During the month of April, five of the top 10 console game titles were for Xbox 360, including: “Crysis 2,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12,” “Michael Jackson: The Experience” and “Portal 2”.
Looking forward, Microsoft will continue to deliver revolutionary experiences for Kinect. Between now and the end of the year, the Kinect game portfolio is expected to triple its current number of games with new titles. Microsoft remains optimistic about strong momentum continuing throughout 2011, and looks forward to sharing further games and entertainment news at E3 the week of June 6.
