Saving the universe will have to wait until next year. In a brief statement, BioWare announced this afternoon that Mass Effect 3 has been bumped from a scheduled holiday 2011 release to sometime in early 2012.

In a post on the Mass Effect 3 Facebook page, Executive Producer Casey Hudson broke the bad news: "Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012. The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations."

As if to soften the blow, BioWare also released two new images from the game, seen above and below.

EA has already lined Battlefield 3 up for a holiday 2011 release -- complete with a ridiculous $100 million marketing campaign. I'm guessing this move is as much to give BF3 the holiday spotlight as it is to give BioWare a few more months to polish Mass Effect 3. Not to mention EA and BioWare's other huge sci-fi game coming in the fall, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Take your time, BioWare, with Skyrim and the next CoD also set for a holiday season launch, gamers will have their hands full.
